Between history and nature
A historic villajust steps from the sea
Surrounded by greenery and only 200 metres from the sea, Hotel Cavalieri del Mare preserves the quiet charm of a historic Tuscan residence. A peaceful, welcoming retreat many guests return to, year after year, as their second home.
The origins
Along the Salt Road
Hotel Cavalieri del Mare stands at kilometre 1 of the ancient Salt Road, once connecting Massa Carrara with Modena. Travelled for centuries by merchants and wayfarers, the route takes its name from the historic salt trade. The property later became a noble villa and the summer hunting residence of the Sforza family, one of Italy’s most influential noble families.
The architecture
Stables reborn
The current dépendance, recognisable by its large exposed arches, was once used as stables. Its past tells of hunts, rides and noble life in the Tuscan landscape. Today, those same spaces welcome guests in rooms where traces of history can still be felt.
The historic villa
A centuries-old legacy
Traces of the ancient villa can still be found throughout the hotel. The original structure dates back to the 1700s, while details such as the old sundial, wooden beam ceilings and hand-hammered cipollino marble staircases preserve the quiet elegance of its past.
The park and wells
The historic garden
Among holm oaks and maritime pines, the front garden preserves two remarkable historic wells: a 17th-century well in white Carrara marble and a domed brick well dating back to the year 1000.
